Inland from Cote D'Ivoire.... and North of Ghana..... lies Burkina Faso.....a land rich in cultures, with Mande, Mossi, Fulani, Bobo, Lobi peoples topping a list of some 60 indigenous ethnic groups. The nation's capital, Ouagadougou, was once a 15th century Mossi kingdom, one of many West African empires that ruled this area in pre-colonial times. The music is evolving ....like much of the coastal region...with a mix of strong ethnic groups....and modern musical influences returning from the Americas.
Burkina Faso home is to some 60 different ethnic groups, each with their own variety of folk music. The country has produced very little popular music compared to its neighbours, which include African musical giants like Nigeria and the Ivory Coast. Burkinab traditional music has continued to thrive in spite of the influx of popular styles, and the country's cultural and musical output remains quite diverse
Unlike many other
African countries, Burkina Faso has still to integrate the traditional....with
the popular influx....to create a modern national style, and the many influences
from surrounding Ghana. Benin. Mali and Niger are beginning to play a major
part in that process!
