Benin has produced some world class artists down the years. Angelique Kidjo is one of many whose work is a mixture of influences. Congolese Rumba and Ghanaian Highlife are at the core of this genre....but there is also an equal measure of American Soul and Funk to be added to the mix. There are 2 eras of modern development punctuated by the Kerekou Government of 1972. Pre and Post Kerekou saw the development of strong international flavours....whereas the Kerekou Government encouraged the development of music that embraced indigenous roots traditions and instruments. Tohon Stan is one who used water percussion and developed into tchink-system music. Benin is also the home of Jazz guitarist Lionel Loueke...........known for his work with Herbie Hancock................ and the Orchestre Poly-Rhythm de Cotonou. Their speciality was a music of Vodoun Rhythms
