"a very rare species...............to suffer so much.....to feel so much pain..............to experience an internal volcanic hell...........

in order to express what is deep inside .......is the ultimate commitment to the creative arts........"

It is more difficult to describe the psychological make-up of this man than it has been to attain a proficiency in the instrument that provided the insight. Outwardly Moriba Kuyateh can play the fool all day! That is in the Shakespearian sense.  We have travelled hundreds of kilometres together; argued about those stupid little things; I accused him of hustling me for a few dalasis (which he probably did); I applauded loudly as he rocked my socks while playing immaculate strikes of the Balafon, and even called in the Army medics to attend to a 4 inch hernia in his groin, while we  were gigging  in Casamance. We sat up all night after the programme as 3 shots of morphine failed to make any impression.  He refused point blank to take an arranged transport back across rebel country from Abene to Brikama; insisting that he could travel the next day with the band. Yet this very morning he thanked me for all of the work that has been done so far...................and he can sense the tension and resolution not only in the music, but also in our lives.....!

Words like radar, 6th dimension, psychic, spooky, intuitive .....do not even come close to describing the frequency at which this man operates....and if all of the guys in the band were this sensitive.................Music would be a feel thing..... and a thought provoking business!

Moriba plays Balafon in Tata Dindin's Salam Band, and is in reality the midfield general of the whole team! Yet he is a master Kora player in his own right. We salute a talent that drives the rhythm section with harmony-based  Balafon in a way that would have made Milt Jackson sit up and take notice. Yet listen if you will to Moriba Kuyateh playing solo Kora, and duets with Dembo Jobarteh on guitar.

Moriba has been working for sometime now with Kane from Kaira Records in the USA, and is applying for a Visa at this time....... Here..... is the reference that I have written for him...............I think it is important that all of you who have been fortunate enough to grow up in a world where you go to school......college........conservatoires etc. ...........appreciate that were this man to have lived in such a world...................he would be the John Coltrane................the Jimi Hendrix................or Albert Camus' The Outsider ......who comes in from the cold and becomes the Master. The American Embassy here has just celebrated Black America Cultural Heritage month, and never have the Oscars and the Grammies been more blessed with African American talent. Moriba will add to that Heritage with real style. And check out www.kairarecords.com  The feeling I get from working with these guys is what makes it all worthwhile....!
