"When a man can keep his head when all around are losing theirs..........................when he can look back upon a lifetime of discipline.......worship........masterful performance.........and creating so much joy for so many people........... and on top of all of that ..............to have fathered two such profoundly diligent musicians as Tata Dinding and Pa Bobo.....................then  he has earned the right to smile..... to relax ...... to ponder a little ......and wander a while.............and to be truly happy.......................!!"

Malamini Baba Jobarteh

Ma Lamin "Baba" Jobarteh passed away on July 31st 2013, after a short illness. I will always remember the lessons I learned from my meetings with him. The world is enriched for his having lived.

Perfect Peace Baba!

There are players, great players, unbelievabley technically gifted players, innovative pioneers, highly evolved Spiritual Masters, and then you arrive at the house of Malamini Baba Jobarteh.........Jobarteh Kunda......in Brikama....The Gambia...West Africa...and this man has done it all his way..... while remaining humble....  and following a life of prayer.

1.Malmini "Baba" Jobarteh. 2.Baba with his Daughter and Grandson. 3. At the Royal Albert Hall in London. UK. circa 1990.   4. With Vocalist Sherriffo Camara.

5. The German Harp Ensemble featuring Rudiger Oppermann.   6. With the Immam of Brikama.

Here are just a few moments from the life of a true gentleman.

Building an Archive of the work of Malamini Baba Jobarteh is indeed a labour of love. This will not happen overnight. Indeed it will give me great pleasure to invite the man himself to travel with me to an internet cafe in Brikama and view the beginnings of what will surely become a definitive study and collection of his work. This stretches back 50 years and for the most part is only recorded  on fast deteriorating cassette tape. As those of you who have worked in the analogue recording world will know, we now have to warm up  1 inch and 2 inch tape for anything up to 4 hours in order that it does not stick together. The cassettes of Malamini's work have  been digitally re-mastered and processed to give a bright modern feel to a sound that was sometimes lacking. We will make every effort to archive as much as possible of what is available.

First up is a section of a cassette that was recorded with Sherriffo Camara on vocals. The track is a traditional arrangement and a very old Mandinka song called Tamalla. Literally translated this means "you work until you see"..........another of those beautiful African allegories...the realisation will come to you when you have done the work..............the penny will drop...........the buttut will fall into the rice sack.................!!

Then we have 9 tracks from a cassette that Malamini recorded in the mid nineties. "Harp Attack goes Africa" features the German Celtic Harp player Rudiger Oppermann. Rainer Granzin plays keyboard; Jamindur Thakur plays Indian Tabla and Roland Schaeffer is featured on Saxaphone and Nada Swaram. This is an eclectic mix of instruments and arrangements;  it is surely the proof, if any were ever needed, that World Music does indeed sit very comfortably in the hands of musicians who have the technique and musicality to express their vision.

Here are 3 Videos. Two of Malamin Jobarteh playing with his adoptive brother Dembo Konteh. These are the two spiritual Kora Masters living in The Gambia at this time. They grew up in the house of Dembo's father Alhagie Bai Konteh, who is featured in this extra-ordinary documentary of his life as a Kora Master!
